Politics and Government Homework - Due Wed, May 28 and Thurs, May 29

We will spend this week watching the Reagan documentary in class.  To supplement the film, you will complete two readings on Ronald Reagan.

2 - Reagan's Realignment of White Southerners

For tomorrow, May 28:

• Finish Reading The Reagan Years
• In at least a page of writing discuss Reagan's foreign and domestic policy.  What type of conservative was Ronald Reagan?  Use specific evidence (including statistical/numerical) to support your claim. You should discuss supply side economics in your writing.

For Thursday, May 29:

• Read Reagan's Realignment of White Southerners pgs 205- 229
• Identify the following: party identification, Goldwater, Jimmy Carter, election of 1976, election of 1980, political dealignment, political realignment, the southern electorate, Bill Clinton
• In at least a page of writing, discuss Reagan's ability to connect with Southern white voters.  What kind of conservative was Ronald Reagan?  

Democratizing Twentieth Century America - Homework - Due Thursday, May 29

You will need to present to me an outline of your presentation Thursday, May 29.  Your outline should be digital, preferably in a Google doc.  It should include:

1 - An introduction that includes (should last 3 minutes or so): 

• Background and context, a short summary of what the course is about, summary of the project assignment, and an explanation/breakdown of the research questions.  Make sure everyone introduces himself/herself.

2 - An historical overview, a synopsis of the historical time period (should last 4-5 minutes)

3 - At least 3 slides per group member in order to fulfill your tasks, including specific answers to your research question.  Please do not attempt to answer your question with one slide.  

• Slides should include: a title, your claim (in smaller font on top of every slide), text in the form of quotes, a graph, and/or image.  
• Each slide should be supported by a personal index card that lists talking points/and or analysis.  Do not use full sentences on your slide, put it on your index card. 

4 - Remember, your presentation should include varied and specific evidence from all the sources, both primary and secondary sources.  

5 - Remember, your presentation should include music and imagery that helps to contextualize the time period.  

6 - Remember, your presentation should be interactive and interesting.  Nothing is worse than an unrehearsed presentation in which everyone speaks in a monotone and unenthusiastic manner.  You may consider scripting out part of your presentation in order to stay organized.  

Each group will present this outline to me on Thursday for credit.  This credit will be part of your project/writing grade and NOT your homework grade.  If this work is incomplete, it will negatively impact your grade for the semester.  

 

Democratizing Twentieth Century - Homework - Due Tues May 28

1 - Read and take notes: 

a) Gosse pg 134 - 137

b) Gosse pg 142 - 145

c) Answer the following question in at least 2 paragraphs, using evidence from the texts: Why then? Why did the movement for Latino and Chicano cultural liberation get underway when it did? 

2 - Read, annotate, and TAKE NOTES  on the two articles handed out in class.  In at least 2 paragraphs, discuss the authors' points of view.  In what ways are New Left ideas evident in the articles?  Why does the Alternet article suggest "White Supremacy Endures?"

You are expected to analyze as a primary source.  In addition to summarizing you must consider the historical context.  How does this help to answer the questions:

Why then?  Why did the Conservative Movement get underway when it did?
What kind of conservative was Ronald Reagan? How did Reagan unify the different facets of conservatism?
